Las Fallas

Each March the city of Valencia, Spain holds “Fallas”, a multi-week festival in commemoration of Saint Joseph in which “falla”, huge temporary monuments, many satirical in nature, are constructed throughout the city. During the Fallas weeks, there are many processions and flower offerings in which locals can be seen in traditional dress. In conjunction, daily “mascletàs”- pyrotechnic events - are held in the main squares, and children throw firecrackers in the streets. The celebrations culminate in a final epic night “La Crema” in which all the Fallas are set alight are midnight. Firefighters stand on guard to hose down the huge bonfires; it puts Guy Faulks Night to shame.
